A disciplined lifestyle is necessary for achieving a successful life. For this, you need to have control in yourself by eliminating bad habits and adhere to good habits. So what is self-control? Self-control or self-mastery is your ability to control your emotions, feelings, and response. Though it looks very easy, it needs a lot of mental and physical discipline to improve your self-control.

Here are the seven  best tips to enhance your willpower and self-control:

  1. Learn to manage your emotions with meditation

The mind is one of the most important factors that control your emotions. If you are facing a tensed situation, just close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, you will get instant relaxation. Meditation is one of the best cognitive self-control exercises that you need practice on an everyday basis. Meditation technique involves mantra meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness.  A relaxed or calm mind will make you more equipped to control yourself. Those who practice meditation regularly have more skill to solve the problems and stay focused in their life.

  1. Follow a healthy diet

Hunger makes your brain fatigued and does not function to its maximum that leads to poor concentration. When you are hungry, it is very difficult to focus on the works you are doing that makes you pessimistic in nature. You will eat or rather overeat when you feel hungry. This will likely to have a depleted sense of self-control in all areas of your life. Remember, your diet has a very important role in controlling your emotions and stress.  So to make yourself positive and active you need to follow a healthy diet. Studies have proved that the Sattvic Diet helps to improve your self-control. (Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sattvic_diet  )  Healthy eating will regulate the sodium and glucose content in your blood making you fit to work and improve your decision making power.

  1. Exercise Regularly

Lack of self-control often contributes to problems like depression, weight gain, and money loss.  For ignoring distractions and resisting temptation, you need to possess a high level of self-control. Studies have shown that regular exercise will help to build self- control. For this you need not to do any heavy exercises, a brisk walk, a cardio exercise or moderately intense exercises will make you fit and fine. Exercises result in increasing the oxygen content in the blood that flows to the brain and will boost the ability to self-control.  Include exercise in your lifestyle even if you have a very busy schedule

  1. Always have adequate sleep

Every day, we find numerous car accidents due to sleep deprivation. Sleep is one of the basic psychological necessities of a human being. Research studies have shown that sleep deprivation can affect the glucose levels in the brain causing depletion in self-control.  A good sleep of six to seven hours at night will help to restore the glucose levels in the brain. Those who have sufficient sleep have a lower strain and better self-control.

  1. Enjoy yourself with nature

Believe in the healing power of Mother Nature. If you spend more time with nature, you will get more refreshed. If you learn to communicate with nature, you will become mentally stronger.  A stroll in the nearby park is the best time to retrospect your life that gives a clear perspective of your life. This will help to increase your self-control.

  1. Forgive yourself

Mistakes and failures are part of every human being. Analyzing your mistake and worrying about it makes you depressed and achieve nothing. First, you need to acknowledge your mistake, make pace with it and move forward.  Forgiving yourself by avoiding negative thoughts is a difficult process and challenging too. It needs compassion, empathy and kindness to forgive you. But once you forgive yourself, you feel relieved and self-controlled.

  1. Sacrifice for achievement

If you want a massive success in your life, you need to leap out comfort zone. A person’s success will be measured by the number of sacrifices he has done in his life. For instance, if you want to be a topper in an exam, you need to invest more time and energy for studies. This means you have to sacrifice your leisurely activities like watching movies, sops, playing etc. If you are unwilling to sacrifice, it will prevent you from great achievements and success.  Take a deliberate effort to sacrifice your negative thoughts and behaviour from your lifestyle. This will give you the ability to control your own self.
